Life Beyond Gluten

The Right Mindset for a Gluten-Free Lifestyle

Going gluten-free, much less maintaining a gluten-free lifestyle, takes a lot of discipline to accomplish. Because gluten is in almost everything under the sun, a gluten-free diet is very hard to achieve for the majority of people. It is a challenge to learn about every single hidden form of gluten. On top of this, you have to actually stick to it. I have been gluten-free for several years now; I can say that I will never go back to eating gluten. On a day to day basis, I practice the following three principles in order to have the right mindset to remain gluten-free.

1) Positive Attitude and Mindset

Having a positive attitude and mindset is a great principle to follow for all situations. Your mental health status during a situation will either help you or break you. Practicing a positive attitude for your gluten-free lifestyle will take you very far in succeeding.

Here is how to have a positive attitude in your gluten-free diet. You must realize that undergoing a huge lifestyle change will take a lot of work and time. Work and time to one, learn about every ingredient you can and cannot eat and two, learn how to cook gluten-free foods (because there is a different science to cooking gluten-free foods). It will help you a lot, if you go ahead and accept that this will take a lot of time and work and can be stressful.

You can reduce this stress by being positive and not focusing on all of the things that you don’t know yet, or when you accidentally eat gluten, don’t stress. Look at those situations as learning experiences for the future. When you make something gluten-free that doesn’t exactly taste that great, look at it like this: I know how to NOT do it next time. Eventually you will overcome all of these accidents and perfect your gluten-free lifestyle.

2) Practice Self-Love

Self-love is very important for a huge lifestyle change. When you change over to a gluten-free diet, you will have trouble with craving your favorite foods that have gluten in them. It can be very easy to fall into a trap of disappointment and sadness because you can’t eat the foods you want to eat. Everyone will have days where they feel frustrated. Sometimes you really want some of your favorite cake, bread, and more, but can’t have it.

Whenever I feel this way, I keep myself from falling into this trap by finding a new favorite gluten-free alternative that I eat when I crave certain types of food. I am not about denying your cravings, because it makes maintaining a gluten-free diet very difficult. However, I do believe you can find a new food to look forward to eating.

3) Support Group

I believe we are all placed on this Earth to help one another. Going at something alone can be very difficult to succeed. By having a great support group will make anything a lot easier to succeed. This can come in the form of a spouse, coworker, friend, family member, or an acquaintance. You need someone who can hold you accountable for keeping a gluten-free diet. You also need positive encouragement when you have trouble sticking to the new lifestyle.
